Pearl et Stasha ont douze ans, sont jumelles. Deux jeunes filles ordinaires. Mais pour les nazis, elles ont une particularité : ce sont des «Mischling», des sang-mêlé. C’est à ce titre qu’elles sont déportées à Auschwitz, à l’automne 1944, où le tristement célèbre docteur Mengele les sélectionne pour leur faire subir des expériences médicales. Face à l’horreur, les sœurs se réfugient dans l’imagination, la complicité naturelle qui les unit. L’hiver arrivé, et l’armée russe approchant, Pearl disparaît mystérieusement. Ignorant si elle est toujours en vie, Stasha décide, à la libération du camp, de partir à sa recherche.
