Surnommée "la huitième merveille du monde", la Chambre d'ambre a été offerte en 1716 par le roi de Prusse au tsar de Russie. Elle fut dérobée par les nazis puis s'est volatilisée en 1945. C'est à cette énigme que va être confrontée Rachel Cutler, juge à Atlanta, lorsque son père, d'origine russe, meurt dans d'étranges circonstances. Rachel va mener une quête à travers l'Europe.
